Unique Journals and Art Handmade in New England, USA

Laurel Rogers

I am a collage and book artist. My books range from traditional to unique works of art. Traditional journals are hand-sewn with an ancient Coptic Binding and are sized for your pocket, a briefcase and gallery installations. The covers are composed of my own marbled papers, paste papers, handmade or a variety of design papers. My aim is to explore the boundary of book space. In one of my books-“Light at the End of the Tunnel”-the observer is drawn to peek though the hole in the cover: a hint of discovery beneath each page. Other works include folded origami or accordion books, my fanciful “Book Lovers Series”, and three-dimensional sculptural books. I use my musical background as a cellist to draw inspiration for upcoming projects. The book takes center stage as a performer in motion.

The Book Process:

As a book artist, my books range from traditional to unique works of art. My traditional journals are either hand-sewn with a Coptic Binding or made as a hardcover pamphlet. The Coptic stitch dates back to the 2nd-11th century AD. It is made in sections that are sewn through the folds and the chain stick across the spine becomes a decorative element. The covers are composed of my own marbled paper, paste papers, handmade or a variety of design papers. I also explore the boundary of book space taking the idea of the book to make folded, accordion, sculptural, and altered books.

Education:

BM at Northwestern University

MM at Virginia Commonwealth University

During my tenure as a cellist I made handmade paper and collages for relaxation. Since moving to Boston I have become very excited about furthering my knowledge and taking paper to a new level at the Bennet School, Mass Art, Brookline Art Center, and the MFA.
